These are projector headlights, correct?

Correct, they are projectors with a sharp cutoff that puts all the light where you want it, nowhere you don't. Retrofitted using new Eagle Eyes housings so you receive a shiny, new, clear headlight housing ready to plug and play.

Looks like there are two bulb options - D2 and Mini H1? Both are HID? Other than the different beam patterns mentioned on your website, what are the other remarkable differences exist between the bulbs?

That is correct, in a sense. While both are HIDs, the two bulb options is actually two different projector options. Neither are interchangeable.

The Mini H1 is a 2.5 inch projector using rebased H1 bulbs in a compact design, hence it's name. It creates a smaller overall beam, which is neat, tidy, highly efficient for its level of output and the lesser expensive option of the two.

The D2S bulb is a 'true' HID setup, using a 3 inch projector which really lays down the light. The beam is very wide, hits the foreground with stunning efficiency, and lights downroad very well. This option has shown to outperform new vehicle projector HID systems on the market.

The Mini H1 is a proprietary bulb from Morimoto? Is Morimoto the only manufacturer?

The Mini H1 was originally built as a proprietary projector by Morimoto for HID retrofitting, due to its small and easy to retrofit size, but has since been replicated by many others on the market who offer mid to very subpar projectors. Morimoto has, and continues to be, the leader in this space, and why I deal exclusively with their products.

On your website you mention that Xterra headlight assemblies don’t have enough room for LEDs. I found other vendors offering LED protectors in Xterra headlight assemblies. Do you have any insight or knowledge that would lead you to believe these LED projectors are have some functional design flaw that makes them inoperable or otherwise of low quality?

Xterra headlights have a very narrow yet deep bowl. This makes for a tough install. The Morimoto D2S and Mini H1 projectors fit very well due to their torpedo shape- they slide right down into that deep, steep reflector bowl and get locked down, stay there. LEDs require such significant cutting of the headlight to fit that it compromises the structural integrity. LEDs are also very heavy compared to their HID counterparts, thus straining the headlight adjustment screws. I've seen several broken sets that point straight down due this failure. This is not a problem I have had with the Mini H1 or D2S projector. As an aside, I believe HID gives a much sharper, cruiser output to LED.

I do think there are two most important things to note about HID vs LED as well-

1) LED units are one piece. Meaning the LED, projector, amplified power, modulator, the whole unit is all in one assembly. If there is a single point of failure, the unit cannot be fixed. It is an expensive paperweight. With HID, each component can be replaced independently. The power amplifiers, current modulator, lenses, bulbs, which leads us to...

2) LED cannot change the output color. It is whatever you chose at the time. With HID, you can use ultra white bulbs for offroading or dark country roads, easy-on-the-eyes bluish bulbs for longer road trips, and everything in between. You can also choose to change the output power wattage with different ballasts (power amplifiers). Again, it's just the accessibility between components with HID that favors it greatly over LED in a vehicle type application.

How long have you been building headlights?

I have been building customer sets for roughly 10 years now, and for personal use going all the way back to the beginnings of the Mini H1 1.0 over 15 years ago. The technology has come so far. It's really incredible what we can do now, but once you go HID you'll wonder how you went for so long without them.

I am the one who answers your questions, orders the parts, builds the retrofits, ships, and helps do the install free of charge for locals.

Let me know how I can help you choose the right HID setup to meet your needs.
